Summary
Iris (made by Furrensic, Inc.) is a small smart camera that clips onto your cat's existing litter box, paired with a companion app. To make that work, we collect:
- Account information — your phone number (for one-time-passcode sign-in), and a name and email you give us in your profile.
- Information from your camera device — short health-and-status heartbeats, and (when enabled) compressed video recordings of activity at the litter box, plus any live stream you start from the app.
- Diagnostics — basic crash reports and aggregate usage events so the app stays reliable.
What we deliberately do not collect:
- Your Wi-Fi password. When you set up your camera, the app sends your Wi-Fi credentials directly to the device over Bluetooth. They never leave your home and we never receive them.
- Audio. The current camera firmware does not capture or upload audio.
- Your precise location. The app may request location permission only as a side-effect of how Android exposes Wi-Fi network names; we do not store your location.
We don't sell your information. We don't share it with advertisers. We use a small number of trusted infrastructure providers (Google Cloud, Firebase, LiveKit, Stripe) to actually run the service.
Who we are
"Furrensic," "we," "us," and "our" refer to Furrensic, Inc., the company building Iris — a smart camera for your cat's litter box and the companion mobile app, website, and supporting cloud services. You can reach us at hello@furrensic.com for anything in this Policy.
Information we collect
Account information you give us
- Phone number. We sign you in with a one-time passcode sent to your phone via Firebase Authentication. Your phone number is your account identifier.
- Profile. First name, last name, and email address that you provide during onboarding. You can update or remove these in the app at any time.
- Pre-order details. If you place a refundable pre-order on this website, your email and shipping address are collected by Stripe (our payments processor) and a record of your reservation is stored in our backend. Card details never touch our servers.
- Beta program signups. If you sign up for our private beta at
/beta, we record the platform you chose (iOS or Android) and the email associated with your TestFlight or Google Play account so we can invite you.
Information from your Iris camera device
- Heartbeat telemetry. Roughly every 30 seconds your device sends a small status report to our cloud — things like firmware version, uptime, recent error events, the Wi-Fi network name (SSID, not the password) the device is connected to, and a hardware identifier. This keeps the device online, lets us push updates, and helps us diagnose issues.
- Live video stream. When you open the live view in the app, your camera publishes a real-time, encrypted video stream (WebRTC) to our streaming infrastructure (LiveKit), which relays it to your phone. We do not record live streams.
- Recordings. When recording is enabled, the camera encodes short H.264/MP4 video segments and uploads them to our cloud storage. These are tied to your device and account so only you can access them through the app.
- Demo / on-demand scans. If you trigger a scan from the app, the camera captures a still image, uploads it to our cloud, and our backend runs an automated visual analysis. The image and the analysis result are stored against your account.
Information from your phone (the app)
- Device permissions you grant.Bluetooth (for camera pairing), Camera (for live preview during setup), Microphone (for two-way audio in future features), Local Network and — on Android — Location (only because Android requires the location permission to read the Wi-Fi network list). These are requested only when needed and you can revoke them in your phone's settings.
- App diagnostics. We use Firebase Crashlytics to collect anonymous crash reports and basic device context (OS version, app version, environment), and Firebase Analytics for a small set of usage events (app opened, OTP requested, sign-in completed). You can opt out by uninstalling the app.
What we do not collect
- Your Wi-Fi password. When you provision a camera, the app delivers your Wi-Fi SSID and password directly to the camera over a short-range encrypted Bluetooth connection. The credentials never touch our servers.
- Audio recordings. The current camera firmware does not capture audio at all.
- Your precise location. We do not collect, store, or process GPS or device location.
- Contacts, photos, or calendar. The app does not request access to any of these.
How we use information
We use the information we collect to:
- Operate the service — sign you in, pair your camera, deliver live video, store and replay your recordings, run scans, and push firmware updates to your device.
- Communicate with youabout your reservation, your beta enrollment, important service notices, and (rarely) optional product news. We won't spam you.
- Improve reliability by reviewing crash reports and aggregate usage to find bugs and rough edges.
- Protect the service from abuse, fraud, and security threats.
- Comply with the lawwhen we're legally required to.
We do not use your data to train third-party advertising models. We do not sell your personal information.
How we share information
We rely on a small number of trusted infrastructure providers to run the service. They handle data on our behalf under their own privacy and security commitments:
- Google Cloud Platform — hosting (Cloud Run), database (Firestore), and object storage (Google Cloud Storage) for recordings, scans, and account data.
- Firebase (Google) — Authentication (phone OTP), Crashlytics, Analytics, and Remote Config.
- LiveKit — real-time video streaming infrastructure for the live view.
- Stripe — payment processing for refundable pre-order deposits. Stripe receives the card details directly; we never see them.
- Resend — operational email (e.g., notifying us when someone signs up for the private beta so we can invite them to TestFlight or Google Play internal testing).
We may also share information when legally required (such as to respond to a valid subpoena), to enforce our Terms, or to protect the rights, safety, or property of Furrensic, our users, or others. If Furrensic, Inc. is ever involved in a merger, acquisition, or sale of assets, we will tell affected users before any personal information is transferred.
Data retention
We hold information only as long as it's useful for the purpose it was collected, or as long as the law requires. In practice that means:
- Account information — for the life of your account. Delete your account and we delete it.
- Recordings and scans — until you delete them, or until you delete your account, whichever happens first. (We may add per-user retention controls in the app over time.)
- Heartbeats and diagnostics — kept for a limited rolling window for troubleshooting and then aged out.
- Pre-order records — kept while your reservation is active and then for as long as we need to satisfy refund, tax, and accounting obligations.
Your rights and choices
Subject to local law, you have the right to access, correct, export, or delete your personal information, and to object to or restrict certain processing. You can:
- Update your profile from the app at any time.
- Delete recordings from the app.
- Cancel a pre-orderany time before your unit ships and we'll refund the deposit in full.
- Withdraw from the beta program by emailing us.
- Delete your account by writing to hello@furrensic.com. We will delete your account and associated data, except for records we are required to keep for legal, accounting, or fraud-prevention reasons.
If you live in the EEA, UK, California, or another jurisdiction with specific privacy rights, you also have the right to lodge a complaint with your local supervisory authority. We'll work with you first to resolve any concern directly.
Security
Information in transit between your phone, your device, and our cloud is encrypted using TLS or DTLS/SRTP (for the live video stream). Recordings and scans are stored in access-controlled cloud storage. Sign-in is phone-based one-time-passcode (no passwords for you to lose). We follow standard industry practices, but no online service is ever 100% secure — if you spot a security issue please email hello@furrensic.com.
International users
Furrensic, Inc. is operated from the United States. If you use the service from outside the US, your information will be transferred to and processed in the United States and other countries where our service providers operate. By using Iris you consent to that transfer.
Children's privacy
Iris is not directed to children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from anyone under 13. If you believe a child has provided us with personal information, please contact us and we'll delete it.
Changes to this Policy
We'll update this Policy from time to time. When we do, we'll change the "Last updated" date at the top, and for material changes we'll notify you in the app or by email. Continued use of the service after a change means you accept the updated Policy.
